‘Mett’ could replace Med as top destination
7/14/2010 2:00:00 PM
An emerging area nicknamed ‘the Mett’ will overtake Mediterranean resorts as the top destination for UK holidaymakers, according to The Co-operative Travel. Bookings to the Costa del Sol, Algarve and other Med resorts have dropped 11.6% compared to the Mett’s increase of 23.4% and the company believes the two could swap places by the end of 2011. “The growth of all-inclusive deals, which appeal to people wanting to fix the total cost of their holiday, has helped to increase demand for these fast-growing destinations,” said The Co-operative Travel Director of Retail Distribution Trevor Davis. “At the same time increased capacity and the high cost of the Euro have both contributed to a significant rise in bookings.” If the company’s predictions are true, this would mean that by summer 2012, the Meet would have 38% of UK package holidaymakers. Mett has been devised from the Co-operative Travel’s key destinations: Morocco, Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey.
