Co-op teams up with Rail Europe to offer Eco-friendly travel

12/14/2009 12:00:00 AM

Midlands Co-operative Travel has teamed up with Rail Europe Limited to sell environmentally-friendly European rail travel products.

From hotel trains, high speed trains, night trains, car carriers and InterRail passes, Midlands Co-operative Travel holidaymakers can now take in whole new experiences when travelling to and around Europe.

Ken Smith, Head of Midlands Co-operative Travel, said:  “As an independent travel agent, it is important that our customers have a wide range of holidays to choose from.  As an ethical retailer, it is equally important that we champion ways in which our customers can support environmentally-friendly travel if they wish to do so.  We already offer carbon-offsetting and donations to the Travel Foundation.  Selling rail holidays complements this offering and now means that customers can travel with virtually no carbon footprint.”

Phil Ashwell, Retail Sales & Operations Manager of Midlands Co-operative Travel, added:  “Our customers are becoming increasingly interested in new experiences, as we have seen demonstrated in the success of the cruise market, and European train travel is no exception.  We already provide holidays for those who want to travel by plane, coach or boat, so offering rail travel through Rail Europe is a natural progression of our existing product offering.”

The Rail Europe winter brochure is now available in all 103 Midlands Co-operative Travel and Ilkeston Co-op Travel shops.

Jane Dunham, Head of Sales at Rail Europe, explained:  “We have seen a steady rise in the number of people choosing to travel to and around Europe by train over the last few years.

“I am sure that European train travel will prove popular with those Midlands Co-operative Travel customers who are looking for a way to travel that is a little bit different and, due to its low carbon emissions, isn’t going to literally cost the earth.”
